When should you see an Orthopedic Doctor?

It’s strange that in India a majority of the population do not know which doctor to consult for a specific type of issue. There are physicians dealing with problems like fever to complex infectious diseases like cancer. With the rising number of small clinics all over India, routing a specific problem to an expert in that department is not happening within the Indian Clinics, rather there is a solution to every problem from the same doctor.

A recent epidemic among young people in India is musculoskeletal problems – issues with knee, joints, back, shoulders and so on. For example, walking and standing for a while in shopping malls causes knee or foot pain in young people, and they think it’s normal. And when the pain gets severe, they check the nearby clinics who try to put them in some medications (mostly pain killers).

But no one has ever considered this – “Should I be checking an orthopedic doctor?”

Orthopedic doctors deal with patients suffering with musculoskeletal problems – they use both surgical and non-surgical means to treat – muscular and skeletal problems, spine diseases, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders. Orthopedic problems are a serious issue these days that there are dedicated hospitals only dealing with Orthopedics (just like Eye Hospitals and Heart Centers in India), and there is a rising number of physiotherapy centers in India.

In simple terms Orthopedic doctors deal with patients suffering from musculoskeletal problems, sport injuries, arthritis, osteoporosis, bone problems etc., on a day-to-day basis.

So when should you check on an Orthopedic doctor?

Joint or musculoskeletal pain that’s beginning to grow after injury
Difficulties performing day-to-day activities (like lifting, walking, running and so on)
Low level of back pain for more than 2-3 weeks
Pain in muscle joints, or tendons for more than 2 days
Often occurrence of muscle spasm
Easy occurrence of joint pain while doing routing activities
Swelling around the joint or injury
Unable to straighten your back or stiffness while standing
Moderate or advanced arthritis of the knee or hip
