Fractures of the body are common and a stress fracture is a small crack in a bone that is a result of the repetitive force that happens due to overuse. They are common in the lower legs and the feet, not due to the only weight-bearing bones of the entire body but due to constant and repeated shock absorption from activities such as running, jumping and even walking.
Who are the ones developing a stress fracture
Anyone is susceptible to a stress fracture, though it is common to people who are more regularly undertaking activities such as running, athletics, swimming and more track based. People also tend to develop a stress fracture when they make a change to their routine such as buying new shoes, trying to run the same distance in shorter amounts of time etc. These conditions tend to weaken the bones such as osteoporosis and also make the person more vulnerable to stress fractures.
Where do the stress fractures occur?
Most of the stress fractures occur in the 2nd and 3rd metatarsals which are the ones that run from the base of your toes to the back of your legs. This is the part of the foot that is under most stress when you are pushing your feet off the ground. They also form in another part of the bone in the feet called as the navicular as well as the heel, ankle and the lower leg bones.
When do the stress fractures occur?
They are so subtle that you will not be noticing it, when it is their early stages.  There will be no major red flags which will signal that you have a stress fracture, and so in most cases, the condition can get diagnosed after the patient gradually suspects that they may have the undiagnosed condition. Several signs that you cannot ignore happen first such as swelling, tenderness, pain that comes after physical activity, which diminishes while resting. In most of the cases, there may be visible bruising and this is not a common symptom.
A road to recovery
While it is possible that you go to a Podiatric Medical Physician to diagnose a stress fracture with just a physical examination, most of the time the diagnosis will need the use of imaging. X-Rays will not be in the position to pick on small fractures in the early stages but can be used to identify fractures that have been forming for more than a few weeks.
A bone scan can be used to identify small or multiple fractures which are done by injecting you with a radiopharmaceutical, which is a radioactive drug causing areas of bone that are healing to glow white in the scan. The radiation that is used here does not pose any danger to most of the people. This scan is not suitable for breastfeeding and pregnant women. An MRI scan can help finally to build up a high-quality image which can be used to identify fractures early on.
To heal up completely you will need to get plenty of rest and depending on the severity of the fracture you will be out of action for a few months at least. In the meantime, you can take proper calcium and Vitamin D supplements to promote bone healing and can resume physical activity once our Orthomed doctor advises you.
